What's In Those Things

Why is it that once you touch a raw hot dog your fingers will smell like raw hot dog for a minimum of 24 hours?

The Second Best Thing I Found In Tucson

The Sonoran Hot Dog... Check out http://www.sunset.com/food-wine/fast-fresh/new-essentials-sonoran-hot-dog-00400000038780/ for the details. And if you don't know what #1 was, you haven't been paying attention.

No Biggie

There was recently some hoopla about bars and restaurants going no smoking here. People said, "they'll suffer because people won't come out to drink anymore."

Two weekends ago I made an attempt to go to the Lompoc, a place that used to get pretty smoky by the end of the night. We couldn't find a table. We went to another bar to have a couple beers, and then went back. Still no seats. We went to another bar, had a beer, went back, and still no seating.

I went to the Lompoc this past Friday and got the last available table. The place remained packed all night.

My conclusion.... the no smoking ban must be helping bars because the Lompoc was never that full in all the years I've been hanging out there.

And on a related topic... Recession? Where? Why are companies laying people off? Every where I go people are out eating, drinking, and buying crap. Last summer, gas stations were peaking at $4.50/gallon in some places. We started seeing prices skyrocket for food and goods. They said it was because of gas prices. Now, gas has crashed back down to $1.50/gallon at one point and seems to be hovering at $1.80/gallon as I write. Yet... food prices remain high. My gas bill is still high. Why aren't those prices that went up to to the rise in gas prices going back down with the fall in gas prices? These businesses will do themselves in. I'm so confused.

And on a side note... the Rose City Rollers seasoner opener for derby was outstanding. Erin's birthday party was interesting as a bunch of white people sang karaoke rap at a Chinese restaurant. Nick's Famous Coney's was damn good, but their kitchen vent must have been broken because I smelled like hotdogs the rest of the night.

Coming up this weekend... Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings at the Crystal Ballroom on Friday, one of Helen's world famous parties on Saturday, and then Super Bowl Sunday!!! Go... whoever!

The Big Day

Election Day: November 2000
I remember feeling fairly confident. Aside from a lie about a blow job, America had just been through eight of it's best years ever. We had two choices... an intelligent man who had just served eight years in the White House as Vice President, or the son of a rich former President who had never accomplished anything on his own. Things seemed pretty obvious. After a long day of voting, and even longer days of failing to unravel one of the biggest election frauds in American history the people were left with George Bush. My mind was baffled.

Election Day: November 2004
America had been through 9/11, our country had been lied to in order to gain acceptance of an unnecessary war, and every person I had spoken to had ill feelings about the past four years. Our new option was a man who had served in Congress for years, served his country in Vietnam, and could formulate a grammatically correct sentence (something we hadn't heard for four years from our President). By the end of the evening and more election fraud we were stuck with George Bush for another four years. My love of this country was vacant.

Election Day: November 2008
We were losing two wars, the country had never been more divided, our economy had collapsed and was still losing air, and the world looked at us as a joke. We had two options... four more years of the same by another paranoid white haired conservative, or a man who was showing new vision. The question was... Is America ready for the first African-American President? Finally! American voters pulled it off. Bush's friends at Diebold couldn't create enough fraud with bad voting machines to pull off another fraud. Barack Obama won the 2008 election without question.

Inauguration Day: January 2009
I've watched a President get shot, a mountain erupt, a space shuttle explode, and two airplanes crash into the The World Trade Center. These are the memories I have lived through American history that will be those "where you when" moments. There's not a lot of greatness there. I was alive during the first moon landing, Vietnam, and Watergate, but was far too young for those events to impact my memories. Today should be something great. I will remember this day. Today is history. Hail to the chief... I can, once again, feel a sense of pride and respect for being an American.

I have no doubt this administration will be tested. We're on the brink of an all out economic depression. We're stuck in two wars with an exhausted military. Russia is making moves in response to Bush's plan that could lead us back into another Cold War. And Americans have never been more split by moral, ethical, and religious views.

But today is Inauguration Day. Today Barack Obama is sworn in. Tomorrow will be a very interesting day.

Uh Oh - It's The Greatest Thing Ever

I'm not sure whether to thank her or hate her, but my friend Lisa sent me this... THE BACON EXPLOSION. Sausage, Bacon Bits, and BBQ Sauce wrapped in Bacon, and then grilled on the BBQ. Should they just put me on the heart transplant list now, cuz I'm making this and nobody can stop me.

Don't Call It A Comeback

Britney Spears coming out with a new successful album is not a comeback. Shaun Cassidy releasing a new top 10 hit would be a comeback. Britney had an addiction fueled outburst. She was never out of the limelight.

It's sort of like Smashing Pumpkins current announcement that they're doing a reunion tour when only two out of four original members are touring... and have been playing together all along. Show me four for four and I'll accept it as a reunion.

So Much To Say But I Don't Wanna

After thawing out from the big dump, Carol made her way to Portland on New Year's Eve. We headed straight over to Helen's to hang with her, some friends, and 35,000 screaming teenage girls. Much too old to hang until midnight, Carol and I headed back home in time to see Dick Clark stumble through the countdown to 2009. The local members of Al Quaeda came out and blew stuff up in the neighborhood for a half an hour and we went to bed shortly after.

I was feeling a bit sick, as in a relapse of the sinus cold I had, so New Year's Day was spent laying low at the house watching movies and playing XBox with each other.

The next day we took the MAX down to meet up with Carrie and a couple of her friends at the Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl. I know... the Pearl, but the Deschutes is worth it. I had tasty pizza with duck prosciutto, and sampled some tasty beers that will never be found in the bottle. Carol and I then headed over to Cupcake Jones for a comparison to St. Cupcake. Not bad, but the St. will still own my taste buds. We then walked up to the Rogue Brewery to meet the gang again. After some tasting of their local brews there we headed up to the Lompoc for more of the same. Carrie's friends were up from San Fran and one of them wanted a good sampling of Portland beer. We parted ways from the Lompoc while Carol and headed to the 3-D museum. Walking into that place will sort of make you feel like you just walked into a David Lynch film. We finished off our evening at the Bridgeport for a little happy hour before taking the trolley and MAX back home.

We met my parents for dinner and a movie on Saturday. If you haven't caught Frost/Nixon yet, get on it. We spent Sunday morning having breakfast at the Buffalo Gap with Troy and Helen. The rest of the day was spent running a couple errands and watching movies.

While here, Carol experienced sunshine, flooding rain storms, hail, and snow, all while remaining mostly in the 30's. A good time was had by all and she'll be back again in mid-February. Our next stop is for her to experience a little Nick's Famous Coney's.

I dropped her off at the airport this morning and headed back to work after nearly a week off. It was just one big bowl of ick back here. I've come across some issues at work that have sort of burst my bubble when it comes to saying I love my job. It may pass, but I have a feeling my take on how to handle people and how "interactive" I want to be with extracurricular activities will most likely shift. I did get to check out the new Pho restaurant within walking distance from my desk. It's nice to say there's finally some decent food in Hillsboro for once.
